Mr. Moviefone reviews 'The Dilemma' and 'The Green Hornet'
This week at the movies, the year's first superhero hits theaters with a very unlikely star, and in the year's first big comedy, Vince Vaughn finds himself stuck in the middle in "The Dilemma."
Yes, Vaughn and Kevin James are best buds and business partners. When Vaughn witnesses James' wife sharing the goods with another man, he's torn between telling his friend the truth or keeping the secret long enough to land their big deal. That is the dilemma.
Also starring are Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah and it's directed by Ron Howard.
The Reel Deal: Pleasantly surprised. I figured you mix "Couples Retreat" with "Paul Blart" and you end up with a big fat mess. I had sort of written both of them off. Not so. It's serious and seriously funny, and this is literally Vaughn at his most interesting in a while. I'm in.
One part superhero, one part vigilante. It's "The Green Hornet." Seth Rogan plays Britt Reid, a spoiled, unproductive trust fund kid of a newspaper magnate. But his father's sudden death lights a fire within to clean up the streets. With the help of Kato, the inventive sidekick, he suits up as "the Green Hornet" to take down the leader of L.A.'s seedy underworld.
The all-star cast includes Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz and Tom Wilkinson.
The Reel Deal: The truth is a little green goes a long way. I was bored. The characters are uninteresting, it's flat, the 3D is a waste and frankly, it could have used a little more sting. But other than that I loved it. No i didn't. I'm out.
In limited release this week are the love story confessional "Barney's Version," starring Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver, and "Plastic Planet," a documentary about the price we're paying for this virtually indestructible product.
