Mr. Moviefone reviews 'No Strings Attached' and 'The Way Back'
This week at the movies, Ed Harris and Colin Farrell are fighting for their lives, and golden globe winner and sure-fire Oscar nominee (and probably winner) Natalie Portman is givin' it up as friends with benefits turns into much more in "No Strings Attached."
Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman play longtime friends who take their relationship well past the platonic level. But sex leads to love in a complication they really weren't ready to handle. Also featured are Kevin Klein, Cary Elwes, Lake Bell and Greta Gerwig.
The Reel Deal: Who knew that Ashton Kutcher could out-charm Natalie Portman, romantic comedy is not the black swans strike zone. Plus, a movie about friends with benefits needs to be saucy and no strings attached is a little dry, but, enough good one liners, mostly from the supporting cast, make it a date night movie worth checkin' out. I'm in...but just barely.
Based on a true story, a group of prisoners escape from a Siberian labor camp only to face a 4,000 mile trek. With little more than the clothes on their backs, they journey through sub-zero temperatures, across the desert and over the mountains to find their way back to freedom. The movie stars Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan and is directed by Peter Weir.
The Reel Deal: All the performances are great, it's well directed, the locations are amazing, the make-up is fantastic (and how often have you heard me comment about make-up?) but here's the thing. "The Way Back" is a story of human suffering, endurance and survival...and watching it is almost the same. It's a long trek with these boys, and girl. But it's worth the journey and you'll be glad you took it. I'm in.
