Mr. Moviefone reviews 'Footloose,' 'The Thing,' 'The Big Year'

10/14/2011 by 'Mr. Moviefone' Russ Leatherman

This week at the movies, "The Thing" rises from the frozen mountain of remakes, there's a blue-footed booby, and a whole new generation of teenagers are "Footloose."

In the update of the 1984 hit starring Kevin Bacon, a high school kid from the city moves to an uptight country town that outlawed dancing after five teens were killed in a crash after a night out. But he's fighting for his right to party and winning the heart of the local preacher's daughter (played by Julianne Hough).

The Reel Deal: With a ton of energy, a cast to match, and a thumpin' good soundtrack, kick off your Sunday shoes and everybody cut footloose. I'm in.

You can't run and you can't hide from "The Thing."

In this prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 horror film, a team of scientists in the Antarctic accidentally unleash an alien from its icy resting place. The alien picks off its prey one by one, assuming the form of its victims and causing paranoia to grow about who is human and who isn't.

The Reel Deal: It'd be fun to have a good horror movie in theaters for Halloween. Instead, we get another needless remake, and the thing about "The Thing" is that "The Thing" sucks. I'm out.

What do you get when you put Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin together? Hopefully some laughs with "The Big Year."

This quirky comedy takes you into the ultracompetitive world of elite bird-watching. That's right, a bird-watching competition, where Black, Wilson and Martin will do whatever it takes to reach bird-watching glory.

The Reel Deal: You might think a comedy about ornithology is for the birds. But you'd be coo-coo to miss Black, Martin and Wilson in "The Big Year." In fact, you'll crow about it to all your friends. I'm in.
