Mos Def joins 'Dexter' for season 6 (Spoilers)
Actor and hip hop artist Mos, also known as Mos Def, is set to appear on the upcoming sixth season of "Dexter" along with Tom Hanks' son Colin Hanks, who was announced as a guest star earlier this week.
The Showtime drama series features Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a serial killer who only targets people responsible for murder and who moonlights as a blood spatter analyst at the Miami Police Department.
Warning: Spoiler alert!
Mos, "formerly known as Mos Def," will appear in several episodes and play Brother Sam, a "hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion, yet seems to continually find himself surrounded by violence," Showtime said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com.
Mos, who is 37 and whose real name is Dante Terrell Smith, began his on-screen acting career as a teenager in the late 1980s and went on to star opposite Bill Cosby on the short-lived series "The Cosby Mysteries" in 1994.
Mos earned an Emmy nomination for his role as surgical technician-turned heart surgery pioneer Vivien Thomas in the 2004 television film "Something the Lord Made" and also starred in movies such as "The Italian Job" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
Mos has appeared on television programs such as "Chappelle's Show," "NYPD Blue" and played a patient stuck in an almost vegetative state dubbed "locked-in syndrome" on the medical drama "House M.D." in 2009.
Mos has also served as the host, music supervisor and co-executive producer for the HBO series "Def Poetry."
On the upcoming sixth season of "Dexter," Colin Hanks, 33, is set to play play Travis, a "highly intelligent young expert on ancient artifacts who gets linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami," on all 12 episodes, Showtime has said.
Notable guest stars of the past include John Lithgow, who played a killer, and Julia Stiles, who portrayed Morgan's love interest.
The sixth season of "Dexter" premieres in the fall of 2011 and production on it begins in June, Showtime says. Showtime president David Nevins told TVLine.com that Morgan will not face off against one villain, adding: "There's one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it's not exactly that one person.
Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Morgan's potty-mouthed detective sister Debra, filed from divorce from Hall in December 2010 after almost two years of marriage.
The previous fifth season saw her character appearing extra suspicious of her brother, raising speculation she may soon discover his true identity, if she has not already.
