Miley Cyrus ends her run on 'Hannah Montana' Sunday
After four seasons, 'Hannah Montana' comes to a close on Sunday with its series finale airing at 7 p.m. ET.
In the episode, the show's main character, Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus), has to make a choice between taking a coveted film role or going to college with her best friend Lily (played by Emily Osment).
In the show, which debuted in 2006, Cyrus portrays the ordinary teenage girl named Miley Stewart who masquerades as pop star Hannah Montana by night. Her real-life father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus, players her on-screen dad, Robby Ray Stewart. The series spurred a 2009 movie and a wide variety of branded merchandise.
Cyrus, who began her acting career when she was eight, told OnTheRedCarpet.com in July that she had outgrown the series. "If we could do this show forever, we would," Cyrus said. "But there's no way to take this character and make it 'Hannah Montana Goes to College' and then Hannah Montana does what, what happens next? I think I'm just growing at just the right time, being able to put an end on this chapter and start a new one, at the right time.
In recent years, Cyrus has been focusing her attention on the big screen. She starred in "The Last Song" in 2010 and will be starring in the 2011 film "LOL: Laughing Out Loud" with Demi Moore. Cyrus plays a girl who deals with high school romances and friendships as well as overbearing parents. She has also recently been filming the sorority comedy movie "So Undercover" with Kelly Osbourne.
However, Cyrus' transition to grown-up film star has hit a few bumps, most recently with a video surfacing in December on TMZ that showed her smoking out of a bong, swearing and laughing uncontrollably.
Cyrus' spokesperson denied comment on the footage. TMZ reported she was smoking the natural herb salvia, which is legal in California and has hallucinogenic effects.
Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus' father and a rock singer who is also her costar on "Hannah Montana", said on his Twitter page half a day after the video was posted: "Sorry guys. I had no idea. Just saw this stuff for the first time myself. Im so sad. There is much beyond my control right now."
Osbourne took to Twitter last month to defend her costar on the scandal, saying, "I'm sick of all the haters judging her. She made one mistake and trust me she has learned her lesson! Miley is one of the most hard working respectful women I have ever worked with I am learning a lot from her!"
