Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth end engagement (Confirmed)

09/16/2013 by Corinne Heller

Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth have called off their engagement, following weeks of breakup rumors and amid a backlash against the pop star's racy music videos and MTV Video Music Awards performance.

The two had postponed wedding plans earlier this year. Hemsworth's spokesperson confirmed to OTRC.com on Monday, Sept. 16, that the engagement was off, following a report by People magazine.

Reps for both celebrities have not commented on whether the two are still together. According to E Online, they have ended their almost four-year relationship. The outlet quoted unnamed sources as saying that it was Cyrus' decision and that she had come to grips "with Liam being what she believed was less than faithful to her." Hemsworth has not commented.

The Australian actor had proposed to Cyrus, his co-star in the 2010 movie "The Last Song," on May 31, 2012 with a 3.5-carat Neil Lane diamond ring. Hemsworth has not commented about her recent public behavior. Recently, Cyrus' Twitter account stopped following his, spurring fresh rumors about a possible breakup. Similar unconfirmed reports have been printed by tabloids for months.

Cyrus, who rose to fame as a child star of the Disney Channel show "Hannah Montana," has recently stirred controversy over a sexual-themed performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, in which she sang her song "We Can't Stop," whose music video also contains explicit content, and a sexually-suggestive performance of "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke. The FCC received more than 150 viewer complaints.

Cyrus released another music video, "Wrecking Ball," last week. She appears naked in it. Following online criticism, the singer said in a radio interview that viewers should look more into the meaning and emotion of the song.
