Michelle Williams to star in 'Cabaret,' her Broadway debut

09/05/2013 by Corinne Heller

Michelle Williams is set to make her Broadway debut in a 2014 revival of the racy musical "Cabaret."

The story is set in German in 1931 during the Nazi Party's rise to power and focuses on the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy cabaret club. Williams, a 32-year-old three-time Oscar-nominated actress will play Sally Bowles, a young British cabaret performer, organizers said. Liza Minnelli had played the part in a 1972 film and won an Oscar for her performance.

The new revival of "Cabaret" is set to open officially at Studio 54, a famous 1970s-era nightclub that is now home to the Roundabout Theatre Company, on April 24, 2014 (get tickets here). Previews will take place in March.

"The Good Wife" actor Alan Cumming will star as the Emcee, reprising a role he played in a 1998 revival of the 1966 musical that also took place at Studio 54. He earned a Tony for his performances. Cumming also played the part in a 1993 TV adaptation of the musical.

Sam Mendes, who directed Cumming in both productions and the director of the 2012 James Bond film "Skyfall," will helm the new Broadway revival of "Cabaret." Organizers have not yet announced who will play the role of Cliff Bradshaw, an American writer who travels to Berlin and begins a relationship with Bowles.

Williams has acted on stage before -- in 1999, she had a starring role in the off-Broadway play "Killer Joe." She also starred in Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" at the 2013 Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Williams rose to fame playing Jen on the teen drama series "Dawson's Creek" and was later nominated for Oscars for her performances in the R-rated movies "My Week with Marilyn," "Blue Valentine" and "Brokeback Mountain." Last year, she played Glinda in Disney's "Oz the Great and Powerful."
