Michelle Williams keeps hair short 'in memorial of somebody who really loved it'
Michelle Williams told Elle U.K. that she keeps her hair short "in memorial of somebody who really loved it," possibly referring to her former partner, Heath Ledger.
Williams and Ledger starred together in the 2005 movie "Brokeback Mountain", which earned Williams an Oscar nomination. They have a 5-year-old daughter named Matilda.
"What Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair," the actress told Elle U.K. for their December issue. "Though that's unlikely to happen any time soon."
"I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair," she continued, "and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it."
Even though Matilda isn't a fan, Williams said that that she felt like she'd "grown into" the hairstyle.
"I feel like myself with short hair... And it's been a really long time since I had long hair, five years," Williams continued, before admitting, "The only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!"
In a recent interview with Vogue magazine, Williams said her life has "kind of repaired itself" since the death of her former fiancé, Heath Ledger, and that his passing has affected all facets of her life.
"It's changed how I see the world and how I interact on a daily basis. It's changed the parent I am. It's changed the friend I am," Williams told Vogue. "It's changed the kind of work that I really want to do. It's become the lens through which I see life-that it's all impermanent."
Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment in 2008, months after he and Williams broke up after a three-year relationship. He died from an accidental overdose of prescription medication.
Williams' new film, "My Week With Marilyn" is set to hit theaters across the United States on November 9. The actress, who rose to fame with a supporting role on the WB series "Dawson's Creek," portrays one of Hollywood's most famous leading ladies and sex symbols, Marilyn Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36.
"My Week With Marilyn" is based on the week that British writer Colin Clark worked as Monroe's assistant while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom in the summer of 1956. British actor Eddie Redmayne plays Clark and accompanied Williams to the premiere.
"Something I appreciated about her was what a simple dresser she was," Williams said of Marilyn Monroe. "She's really in her personal life completely unadorned and I like that. She rarely wore jewelry and everything that she did wear really had simple lines. Everything she wore looked like she could take her shoes off and run through a field." Williams, a 31-year-old Montana native, is also known for movies such as "Brokeback Mountain" and the R-rated "Blue Valentine." Both movies earned the actress Oscar nominations.
Williams also recently filmed the independent movie "Take This Waltz," which was directed and written by Sarah Polley and also stars Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman. No wide release date has been announced.
Williams is currently shooting the fantasy film "Oz: The Great and Powerful." Production began in July. Williams plays the witch Glinda, while James Franco plays the title role of the wizard. The movie also stars Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz and is set for release on March 8, 2013.
