Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones split? Pair taking 'time apart'
Did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones break up?
The two have separated temporarily, the actress' rep says, following reports on Wednesday, Aug. 28 by outlets such as People magazine and the tabloid The National Enquirer, adding that the celebrity couple intends to try to salvage their 12-year marriage. No legal papers have been filed.
"Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment," Zeta-Jones' rep said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com.
Gossip sites and tabloids had published several unconfirmed reports over the past few months that suggested the celebrity couple was headed for a breakup. Douglas, 68, and Jones, 43, wed in November 2000 and have two children together -- a 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.
The actors have not appeared together at public events often this year. They walked the red carpet at the 2013 Oscars (watch video, above) and were last photographed together in public in April, according to People magazine. On April 22, the two attended the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Gala honoring Barbra Streisand, who received the 40th Annual Chaplin Award.

People magazine on Wednesday reported that the two are "taking a break" and also quoted a source as saying that "the stress has taken a toll on their marriage." The actors have been challenged by health and other personal issues over the years:
2. Also in 2010, Douglas' son Cameron, whose mother is the actor's ex-wife Diandra Morrell, was sentenced to five years in prison for heroin possession and drug distribution. That sentence was extended by more than four years after he pleaded guilty to possessing drugs behind bars. Projected year of release: 2018.
3. In 2011, it was confirmed that Jones had sought treatment for bipolar II disorder.
4. Jones also checked into a health care facility this past April but did not reveal her ailment.
