Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) promises more 'entertaining' 'Dancing' outfits
Ron Artest, who recently changed his name to Metta World Peace, says he plans on being more "entertaining" with his outfits on "Dancing with the Stars" if he survives Tuesday's elimination.
The 31-year-old professional basketball player and his partner Peta Murgatroyd received 14 out of 30 from the judges for their Cha Cha Cha on the season 13 premiere of ABC's hit celebrity ballroom dancing series (read recap). The pair received the lowest score of the night.
"The main thing is that I entertained," World Peace told OnTheRedCarpet.com after the show. "When I came out here and I didn't want to do it at first and we decided to do it ... I was like, 'Okay, if I come out here, my outfits got to be over the top. I want people to be like, 'What in the world was this guy wearing? What in the world was this guy thinking?'"
"Hopefully, if I don't get off the show by next week, I'm going to even be more and more entertaining with the outfits and everything," he said.
World Peace said he was "conservative" about his costume at first./p>
"They had me wear black on black and I was like, 'This is so boring.' And then I got the email from the 'Dancing With The Stars' people and they said, 'What ever you want to wear, you can wear,'" he said. "It turned into glitter and chains and has a belt and bowtie and all that stuff.
World Peace's daughter Diamond Artest, 8, stayed close to her dad after the show. The girl battled cancer when she was 4. World Peace said that he joined "Dancing With The Stars" to raise money for cancer research."
"He was good - really good." his daughter said. "I wish him good luck."
Contestant Chynna Phillips, known for her work with the musical trio 'Wilson Phillips,' and professional partner Tony Dovolani earned the top score of 22 out of 30 for the night. Contestant J.R. Martinez, known for his service overseas and his work in the ABC daytime drama 'All My Children,' and partner Karina Smirnoff also earned a score of 22, tying the two pairs in first place for the premiere episode.
The 12 pairs return on Tuesday, September 20, and the first couple is expected to be eliminated. Artest and Murgatroyd plan to perform the challenging QuickStep routine.
"It's about entertaining," Artest added. "As long as I come out there and have fun, that's all I want to do."
