Meryl Streep donates $10,000 to Rhode Island school in Viola Davis' honor

Meryl Streep has reportedly donated $10,000 to a school in Rhode Island in honor of actress Viola Davis.

Streep donated the money to a struggling charter school called the Segue Institute for Learning in the Rhode Island city of Central Falls, Davis' hometown, according to Reuters. Upon hearing about the school's plight from Davis, Streep sent a $10,000 check to the school, which is facing closure.

Streep, 62, won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role on February 26, beating out other contenders in the category which included 46-year-old Davis, who was nominated for her work in "The Help." Streep won the award for her work in "The Iron Lady" as Margaret Thatcher, a Conservative leader and Britain's first and only female prime minister.

The win marked Streep's third Oscar win and 17th nomination.

Streep's check to the school arrived on February 27. "We've just been screaming from the rooftops," Angelo Garcia, founder and director of operations at the school, told Reuters. "We're excited Meryl Streep has gotten the ball rolling for us, but we recognize there's a long road ahead of us."

The school is located in a public building that may be sold because of the town's financial woes. It has to buy the building or move to a new location in 12 or 13 weeks, Garcia told the wire service.

The donation came from Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts, Streep's charity foundation. The money will help go towards the school's fundraising campaign which aims to raise $1.2 million to buy the building and renovate it. The school has 200 students and is expected to grow to 240 next year.

Garcia is a childhood friend of Davis' and says the actress has "always kept us on her radar."
