Melissa Gilbert's co-stars explain her 'Dancing With The Stars' injury
"Dancing With The Star" had its first casualty in week four, as Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital. But fear not, "Prairie" fans, the actress will be okay.
"I'm alright. Mild concussion and whiplash. Very soon I will be safely home resting and being taken care of," Gilbert wrote on Twitter on April 9, adding, "[Maksim Chmerkovskiy] you are my champion. I adore you. [Gavin DeGraw] bless your heart for carrying me down those stairs!"
Tom Bergeron acknowledged Gilbert's injury at the end of the episode, telling fans that the 47-year-old actress had been taken to the hospital before the end of the live broadcast.
During Gilbert's Paso Doble, which earned them 22 points from the judges, the actress apparently hit her head on the ground and got a mild concussion. When she reported feeling dizzy back stage, fellow contestant Gavin DeGraw carried her down from the red room, out of the studio where she was put on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital.
Gilbert underwent back surgery in 2010, to deal with an injury she sustained during a musical production of "Little House on the Prairie." She and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy acknowledged earlier in the season that they were being particularly careful.
Chmerkovskiy followed the ambulance to support his partner at the local hospital. His brother, professional dancer Valentin and his partner Sherri Shepherd talked about the incident with OnTheRedCarpet.com after the episode had aired.
"She hurt her head a little bit, when she went to kill Maks [in the dance]... you mess with those Chmerkovskiy brothers," Sherri Shepherd joked. "You kill a Chmerkovskiy, you end up in the hospital - I don't know what is going on."
Valentin told OnTheRedCarpet.com, "I was very upset with fact their performance was a little undervalued... I didn't initially know that she was hurt, that was kind of a surprise for everybody that she hit her head. She got nauseous with concussion-type symptoms, you want to take care of that. But it's my brother, its typical Maks fashion of the season so it's nothing new to us - there has to be some sort of issue, some sort of drama."
More details about Gilbert's progress will be revealed during the "Dancing With The Stars" results show, set to air on Tuesday, April 10 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
