Mel G ibson speaks to KABC, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company, in 2009.Mel Gibson's cameo in The Hangover 2, where he would've played a tattoo artist, has been called off according to a statement from the film's director Todd Phillips.

"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie," Phillips said Thursday in a statement according to People. "But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

The Hollywood Reporter said earlier that Gibson would make a brief appearance in the film and quoted a source familiar with the production as saying the tattoo artist character is "pivotal" to the plot, which "features one of the characters going under the needle during a night of debauchery."

It was reported on Monday that Gibson, who has made headlines in recent months due to an ugly custody battle with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, would make an appearance in the Hangover sequel.
