Mel Gibson has been engaged in another war of words - this time with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who was attached to the actor's upcoming controversial film about the ancient Jewish hero Judah Maccabee.

Eszterhas, who also wrote the scripts for the movies "Basic Instinct" and "Showgirls," accuses the 56-year-old actor of anti-Semitism and has released an audio tape of a man yelling and hurling expletives to the website The Wrap.

Mel Gibson has come under fire by the Anti-Defamation League over a report that says he is developing a movie about Judah Maccabee, who led a Jewish revolt against Greek and Syrian forces during biblical times and whose victory is celebrated during the Hanukkah holiday.

Gibson, who won an Oscar for playing a rebellion leader himself in the 1996 film "Braveheart," has struggled to resurrect his career following a 2006 drunk driving arrest, during which he ranted against Jews. He has said that neither he nor his 2004 film "The Passion of the Christ," which also stirred controversy, are anti-Semitic.

The sheriff's deputy who arrested Mel Gibson for drunken driving in 2006 will have his discrimination case heard by a jury, a judge ruled on January 12, according to the Associated Press. However, Superior Court Judge Barbara Scheper, expressed doubts that Deputy James Mee's case can win.

"While I think it's thin, I think there are enough facts to create a question for the jury to decide," Scheper said, according to the wire service, during a hearing in which Los Angeles County attorneys tried to have the case dismissed.

Mee, who arrested Gibson in Malibu in 2006, will be allowed to argue to jurors that he suffered discrimination and had to work in a hostile environment with his colleagues after the incident. The trial is scheduled for February 14.

Mel Gibson is one of the celebrities who was invited to Whitney Houston's funeral on Saturday, February 18, OnTheRedCarpet.com has learned.

However, the 56-year-old actor is unable to make it due to "family plans," TMZ reported.

Mel Gibson's divorce from his wife for 28 years, Robin Gibson, was finalized on Friday, December 23, and the actor's ex-wife is reportedly walking away with a big financial settlement.

As part of the settlement, the actor's ex-wife's name is being restored to Robyn Moore, according to the Associated Press. Moore filed for divorce in April 2009, just months before the actor's then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, gave birth to a baby girl named Lucia. Gibson cited in his court filings that the couple separated in 2006.
