Mayim Bialik talks 'Big Bang Theory' season 7 and more: 5 highlights
Mayim Bialik has come a long way since her days as young actress in "Beaches" and "Blossom."
Since then, the 37-year-old actress has gone on to appear in shows like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." She currently stars on "The Big Bang Theory" as Amy Fowler. In 2007, the actress earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience form UCLA.
Bialik recently chatted with OTRC.com host Rachel Smith about "The Big Bang Theory," how she celebrated her recent Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress and her participation in the STEM Behind Hollywood education initiative.
Check out five highlights from the interview below.
1. She celebrated her Emmy nod with vegan doughnuts
"I was in San Jose with my kids. Well, the first thing I did, I found out -- it was very early in the morning, so everybody was sleeping and I saw this can of Pringles on the kitchen table and it seemed like a great idea at like 5:30 in the morning -- I was like, 'I'm gonna eat those Pringles,'" Bialik explained. "And then my kids woke up and then we were flying home from San Jose to L.A. and all I wanted was vegan doughnuts, so we got vegan doughnuts in the Bay Area."
2. She's working with her stylist to find the perfect dress for the Emmys.
"That's not my strong suit, is the fashion part, but I have a great stylist. Her name is Alison Kahn and it is her strong suit, which is why she's good at what she does. I try to do what I do," the actress said. "Yeah, we've already started looking. It's fun, but it's also -- for someone who's naturally good at that stuff or into it, it's hard for me."
"I tend to look good in jewel tones, I'm told. So I like bold colors," Bialik later added. "Nude is also fun. I don't mean -- I meant the color!"
3. She'd love to be in more scenes with co-star Simon Helberg.
"I never really had scenes with Simon Helberg, who plays Wolowitz, and it's a little bit of a joke that I'm obsessed with Simon. He's such a talented comedian. So I always want to be in scenes with him," she said with a laugh. "I think he's told the writers 'Mayim is creeping me out. Don't put me in scenes with her.' But, I would love -- 'cause I've done stuff with Kunal [Nayyar], you know with the Raj character, I've done stuff with Johnny Galecki's character and, obviously, with Kaley Cuoco's character, but I haven't really had Simon moments."
"I'm hoping for that, unless he tells his security people to not let that happen," she added.
4. She considers "Big Bang Theory" co-star Jim Parsons a "dear friend."
"I work with some incredible people. We have amazing writers that seem much more like a group of academics than a group of sitcom writers. They're so bright and fun and they give us such interesting material," Bialik told Smith. "I love Jim Parsons and I've found such a dear friend in my job. Many of us go to work and don't like people that we work with and it's so nice that I do work with people that I do enjoy being with, so it's a joy to work with him."
5. She's involved in a cool education initiative called STEM Behind Hollywood.
Bialik has been taking part of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education initiative for a few years now and is also taking part in its new program called STEM Behind Hollywood. We'll let her explain.
"We've been working with Texas Instruments for two years now and our back to school program is called STEM Behind Hollywood and the idea is to take things that kids and young people see in Hollywood already and teach the math and science behind them," she told Smith.
"So we have a website, STEMHollywood.com, and we have free, downloadable activities for the TI-Nspire graphic calculator and also as an app for the iPad and we started with zombies and we're teaching the math and science behind zombies," she said. Bialik later added, "Next week we're doing superheroes, forensics and space."
The new season of "The Big Bang Theory" premieres on Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
