Mayim Bialik divorce: 'Big Bang Theory' actress blogs about split from husband
Mayim Bialik, who stars on the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" and was the main star of the 1990s sitcom "Blossom," says she and her husband of nine years, Michael Stone, are getting divorced.
The two have two sons, ages 7 and 4. This was the first marriage for the actress, who is 36 and plays Amy Farrah Fowler on "The Big Bang Theory."
"I'm beating the tabloids to it and posting this Divorce Statement," she Tweeted on Wednesday, November 21, linking to a blog post she penned for the Jewish parenting website Kveller. To "kvell" means to "be pleased with," in Yiddish.
After much consideration and soul-searching, Michael and I have arrived at the decision to divorce due to 'Irreconcilable Differences," she said. "Divorce is terribly sad, painful and incomprehensible for children. It is not something we have decided lightly. The hands-on style of parenting we practice played no role in the changes that led to this decision; relationships are complicated no matter what style of parenting you choose."
In May, Bialik appeared on Anderson Cooper's talk show "Anderson" and talked about "attachment parenting," following a controversial Time magazine cover of a woman breastfeeding her 3-year-old son. Bialik had penned the book "Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way" and told Cooper that her and Stone's two boys sleep on a bed next to theirs.
"The main priority for us now is to make the transition to two loving homes as smooth and painless as possible," Bialik said in her divorce statement. "Our sons deserve parents committed to their growth and health and that's what we are focusing on. Our privacy has always been important and is even more so now, and we thank you in advance for respecting it as we negotiate this new terrain. We will be ok."
Her husband has not commented publicly on the matter. He and Bialik met in a graduate calculus class at UCLA. Bialik joked to OnTheRedCarpet.com in December 2010 at a party to celebrate the 100th episode of "The Big Bang Theory" that she makes her husband call her "Dr. Bialik," referring to the PhD in neuroscience she earned from the college.
She and Stone dated for four years before getting engaged in December 2002. They wed in August 2003 in a traditional Jewish ceremony, according to Jewishweddingnetwork.com, which posted wedding and pre-ceremony photos.
