Matthew McConaughey talks lawyer 'wheeler-dealers'

03/17/2011 by Olivia Allin

Matthew McConaughey spent a good amount of time in a courtroom in 2010 with "wheeler-dealers."

The actor wasn't handling legal issues. He needed to research his next film role. In "The Lincoln Lawyer," set for release on Friday, March 18, McConaughey plays attorney Mick Haller, who conducts his business from the back of his Lincoln town car while working on high-profile cases.

"I spent some time downtown in the federal courts," McConaughey told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the recent premiere for the movie. "Spent some time with the federal judge. I took my two-week road trip to get my thoughts together and then I met a couple of guys who do what this guy, Mick Haller does, defense attorneys, some down around the LA area."

"You really see how some of these guys are wheeler-dealers," he added. "They're all deal-makers. I mean they're players and you see them weaving through the street, they're always in motion. And they're cuttin' deals, cuttin' deals. It's not as formal as you would think it was."

McConaughey has played an attorney in the past. One of his breakout roles was portraying attorney Jake Brigance in the 1996 film, "A Time to Kill," based on the John Grisham novel.

"The Lincoln Lawyer" also stars William H Macy, Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe.

"It was a little scary at times, but in a good way." McConaughey said. "I had good butterflies every day. [It was] a very challenging movie, challenging role, but a lot of fun. I had a lot of good, fun stuff to do in this film."

McConaughey was joined on the red carpet by his partner and the mother of two children Camila Alves. Alves said that she would definitely hire her man as a lawyer, despite the fact that his character works out of his car. Alves and McConaughey have two children, 2 year old Levi and Vida who is 14 months old.

McConaughey currently has seven movies in production, including "Bernie," which is about a moritcian who befriends a wealthy widow, murders her and then creates the illusion that she's still alive. The film co-stars Shirtley MacLaine and Jack Black and is slated for release later this year.
