Mary Tyler Moore to undergo brain surgery to remove benign tumor

05/12/2011 by Carollyn Nguyen

Mary Tyler Moore will undergo surgery to remove a meningioma, a benign tumor of lining tissue of the brain, her publicist confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com.

"Mary Tyler Moore went in for an elective surgery to remove a meningioma, which is a benign tumor of the lining tissue of the brain (not a brain tumor). At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure," the publicist said in a statement.

Moore is known for her roles in "The Dick Van Dyke Show" in the 1960s and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in the 1970s. In the latter, she played Mary Richards, a local news producer in Minneapolis.

After "Mary Tyler Moore" ended in 1977, Moore went on to star in shows such as "The Naked Truth," "That '70s Show" and "Lipstick Jungle."

Earlier this year, Moore reunited with her former "Mary Tyler Moore" co-star Betty White on the second season premiere of the comedy series "Hot in Cleveland" after more than 33 years.
