Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen collaborate with designer, introduce $55,000 pill-covered backpack
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have teamed up with fashion designer Damien Hirst to create a line of very unique backpacks.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, named Womenswear Designers of the Year at the 2012 CFDA Awards, are known for their couture fashion line, The Row. The twins have recently teamed up with fashion designer Damien Hirst to produce a line of backpacks that feature a number of creative designs, one being adorned with... pills?
The bag, which has a price tag of $55,000 according to MTV Style, is a black, patent Nile leather backpack that's embellished with what appears to be multicolored prescription pills. The pills are adhered all over the bag, including the sides and the straps.
According to The Row's Facebook page, the bag will be made available on December 12, and is an extremely limited edition of only 12. Each bag will be signed by the artist, Hirst, and a portion of each sale is set to benefit UNICEF.
In June, the twins incurred the wrath of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for their $16,900 backpack made of mismatched patches of animal fur.
"If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it's probably a Trollsen Twin - or someone wearing one of their new $16,000 totes, which are made from the fur and skins of innocent animals," PETA said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com.
The multi patchwork fur back pack was from The Row's Pre-Fall 2012 leather goods collection. The bag did impress celebrity stylist and designer Rachel Zoe, who named it a "pre-fall staple" on her blog, The Zoe Report.
PETA have long targeted the Olsen twins, even creating an interactive dress-up game called "Fatal Fashion," where the designers are referred to as "Hairy-Kate" and "Trashley."
Mary-Kate and her twin sister Ashley Olsen began their acting careers when they were toddlers, playing Michelle Tanner on the sitcom "Full House," which ran between 1987 and 1995. They went on to star together in several films. Ashley Olsen's final acting role was in the 2004 movie "New York Minute," which also marked her last project she starred in with her twin.
The pair is now known for their fashion empire, which is made up of several clothing and accessory collections, such as the higher-end Elizabeth and James and The Row as well as Olsenboye for JC Penney.
