Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt officially confirmed for 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Although Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have been in "The Dark Knight Rises" rumor-mill for months, Warner Bros. Pictures have officially announced that the actors will join the cast for the third film under director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale.

According to the statement from the studio carried by the Associated Press, Oscar-winner Cotillard will play a character named Miranda Tate "a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham."

Levitt, who was reported by Variety in March to play Alberto Falcone, the son of major crime boss and "Batman Begins" villain Carmine Falcone, is actually playing "John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon," according to the studio's statement.

Both actors have worked with Christopher Nolan before in the 2010 film "Inception"

"When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience," Nolan said in the studio statement. "I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again."

The two actors will join their fellow "Inception" co-star Tom Hardy who will play as the villain Bane, an escaped convict who gains superhuman strength due to a series of drug experiments.

It was confirmed in mid-January that Anne Hathaway will star in "The Dark Knight Rises" as Selina Kyle, whose alter-ego is Catwoman. In the DC comic books, the character is the love interest of Bruce Wayne, who masquerades as the superhero Batman.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is set for release on July 20, 2012.
