Maria Menounos talks 'Dancing With The Stars': 'I think that we went out winners'
The "Dancing With The Stars" semifinals were brutal for some competitors, with usual leaders like Katherine Jenkins suffering an injury and Donald Driver still not getting his ten from judge Len Goodman.
The tough competition made the "Dancing With The Stars: Results Show" particularly tense because it meant that one solid competitor would get sent home. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
In the end, the highest-scoring couple from Monday night, Maria Menounos and Derek Hough, were eliminated. Menounos, 33, told OnTheRedCarpet.com after the show that she is not bitter about her elimination.
"I told Derek on Sunday, after our marathon rehearsals -- when I was breaking down -- that I just wanted to come out on Monday and do a great job and to me, I didn't want to go out on a bad note," Menounos told OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent George Pennacchio on May 15. "I didn't want to go out looking like I could've looked in week one. Right? I'm like 'We've had such a great arc, we've done so well, I want to be able to look back and say Ok, we did a great job.' We did. "
"So when the night ended, we high-fived and chest-bumped and I'm like now whatever happens is a bonus," she added.
The final line-up for "Dancing With The Stars" season 14 is William Levy, Katherine Jenkins and Donald Driver. Hough explains that when he woke up in the morning, he had a feeling they would get eliminated.
"I woke up this morning and I said, 'Babe I know you probably don't want to hear this but I think that we're going home tonight and I -- but don't worry about it because you went out with a huge bang.' Last night was like her night," Hough said. "She killed both dances, fantastic and it was sort of -- it's bittersweet but it's mainly just sweet because this entire season has been incredible."
"I don't just mean from a dancing perspective, just our friendship and everything and this experience, it really has been a fun season," he added. "I put myself through hell a little bit, and her, but for the most part it's been fun."
"I'm not bitter because I've had an amazing experience," Menounos said. "I literally never thought I would make it this far -- ever."
Menounos, who is known for hosting the entertainment news show "Extra" with "Dancing With The Stars" alum Mario Lopez, had a tough time throughout the season with injuries that included cracked ribs and fractured feet.
"I think that we went out winners. No one will ever know what I physically had to go through to get here," she said. "I know the people around me know and to me, that's an accomplishment and I'm proud to be able to perform the way I did under those circumstances. "
She added, "I'm just thankful to everyone who kept us in the game this long."
