Marcia Cross on what she wants for Bree on 'Desperate Housewives' - See video
As "Desperate Housewives" comes to a close after eight seasons on May 13, original cast member Marcia Cross and fellow co-star Vanessa Williams dished to OnTheRedCarpet.com what they want for their characters in the end and what they'll be looking to do next.
"I do feel like it's the time to move on, that still doesn't make it any easier and it feels just as bittersweet and I suppose if someone said to me, 'One more year?' I would say, 'Well okay,''" Cross told OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent George Pennacchio recently. "But I do feel that it is the right time so that it's not so dribbling out and weak."
Cross has played Bree Van de Kamp since the series began back in 2004. Vanessa Williams joined the cast as Renee Perry in 2010 for the seventh season. "It's been fantastic to jump into a show that I first watched as a fan and then to be able to go full circle and end up on it is tremendous," Williams said.
Cross, 50, has had roles on series like "One Life to Live," "Melrose Place" and "Everwood." After the series comes to an end, Cross says she'd like to play a character that brings more emotions to a role as Bree is a much more reserved person than herself.
"It's not so much that I've been thinking about other project but because I've been playing this character for so long I'll trigger something like I want to play somebody high powered and smart or I want to play somebody evil and wicked and filled with rage," she said. "There are colors in me that I've been sort of monitoring and suppressing for a while."
She added, "I honestly I act because I need to and so all that stuff needs to come out. I need to play another instrument."
Despite the fact that she does not have much in common with her character, Cross says she hears from people who relate to Bree often. "A lot of fans will say, 'Oh I'm just like you and they understand me ... Bree," she said. "But of course I'm not really domestic so it's an interesting conundrum of what to say because I lack some of her great, fundamental qualities."
Williams, 49, said of Cross, "She's also so warm, I mean compared to what you play, she is the warmest most honest, open person compared to Bree, who is lovely as Renee has to deal with her."
The two actresses claimed to not know how the show will end for their characters specifically but they each knew exactly what they'd want for their characters in the end.
"I'd like Bree to love herself," Cross said.
Williams said, "I'd like Renee to find love.
The two-hour season finale of "Desperate Housewives" airs on ABC at 9 p.m. ABC is the parent company of OnTheRedCarpet.com.Reporting by George Pennacchio of KABC Television, which produces the entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
