"Homeland" and "Princess Bride" actor Mandy Patinkin has joined the cast of Zach Braff's new film "Wish I Was Here," weeks after the latter star received more than $2.6 million in donations for the movie via an online fundraising campaign on the website Kickstarter.

In the film, Braff will play Aidan Bloom, a 35-year-old struggling actor and family man trying to find himself and home-school his kids. Patinkin, 60, will play his father, Braff said on his Facebook page on Tuesday, alongside a photo of himself with the star.

"When I was a child, my favorite movie was 'The Princess Bride,'" Braff said. "Now that I am an adult, my favorite TV show is 'Homeland.' They have one thing in common: one of my favorite actors of all time is joining us to play my father: Mandy Patinkin."

On his Kickstarter campaign website, Braff describes Bloom's dad as "ailing." The actor is directing "Wish I Was Here" and co-write its script with his brother, Adam, last summer.

Braff, who is 28 and rose to fame with the hit sitcom "Scrubs" and director, writer and star of the 2004 film "Garden State," launched his Kickstarter campaign for "Wish I Was Here" on April 24, More than 38,000 financiers pledged more than $2.6 million -- surpassing a goal of $2 million -- in three days.

The initiative followed a similar successful and widely-publicized fundraising campaign for a "Veronica Mars" film.

Patinkin currently plays CIA agent Saul Berenson on the Emmy-winning Showtime terrorism-themed drama series "Homeland." He is also known for his role as Inigo Montoya in the 1987 cult fantasy film "The Princess Bride" and has also starred on shows such as "Chicago Hope" and "Criminal Minds."
