'Man of Steel' tops weekend box office with $113 million

"Man of Steel" crushed the competition at the weekend box office to become the No. 1 film this weekend.

The reboot of the Superman franchise starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams earned $113 million in its opening weekend, according to The Associated Press. The film had also earned $12 million during Thursday screenings, which brings its domestic total to $125 million.

"Man of Steel" also earned the record for biggest June opening, which was previously held by "Toy Story 3." The CGI-animated family film earned $110.3 million when it opened in June 2010.

"Man of Steel" topped the opening weekend of "Superman Returns," the previous Superman film starring Brandon Routh, which launched with $52.5 million in 2006.

The comedy "This Is the End," came in a distant second at the box office with $20.5 million. The film stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and more as versions of themselves trying to survive during the apocalypse. "This Is the End" initially opened on Wednesday, June 12, and its domestic total now stands at $32.8 million.

"Now You See Me," the heist film centered on a group of illusionists, came in third place for the weekend with $10.3 million. The movie, which has been in theaters for three weeks, has earned a domestic total of $80 million so far.

The action film "Fast & Furious 6" is still going strong after four weeks in theaters and landed in fourth place. The movie earned $9.4 million over the weekend and its domestic total is now $219 million.

The horror film "The Purge" with Ethan Hawke finished out the top five with $8.2 million.
