Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain's horror thriller "Mama" easily dominated the weekend box office, beating out cinema heavyweights "Broken City" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

"Mama" earned an estimated $10.1 million on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is projected to top the four-day holiday weekend with $33.2 million after taking in $28.1 million over the three day weekend, according to the magazine.

The film, directed by Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro who is likely best known for the "Hellboy" franchise and "Pan's Labryinth," is about a couple who takes in their two nieces who were abandoned in the woods for five years after the deaths of their parents. However, the two girls have a bond with an evil spirit.

"Zero Dark Thirty" landed in second place for the weekend box office with $17.6 million, according to the site. The controversial film, which topped last weekend's box office, is expected to gross an estimated $21.4 million over the four-day holiday weekend - pushing its cume to nearly $60 million.

"Zero Dark Thirty" tells the story of the American efforts to hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain stars as a Maya, a young CIA officer who becomes obsessed with finding the former Al Qaeda leader. It was directed by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow.

Chastain won a Golden Globe for her performance in the film and is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category.

"Silver Linings Playbook" nabbed the No. 3 spot with $13.4 million for the weekend box office. The Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper drama is expected to take in $14.2 million for the four-day holiday weekend, according to the site.

Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg's thriller film "Broken City" tied for the fourth place spot with Ryan Gosling's crime drama, "Gangster Squad." Crowe and Wahlberg's movie, which follows an ex-cop seeking revenge after being double-crossed, is expected to gross $10 million for the four-day weekend after opening to a dismal $9 million on Friday and Saturday, according to the site.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger's return in a leading role in "The Last Stand" fell short. The action film grossed just $2 million on Friday, and earned a disappointing $6.3 million for the weekend box office.
