Malin Akerman joins 'Rock of Ages' cast as Tom Cruise's love interest

Malin Akerman, who has starred in films like "Couples Retreat" and "Watchmen," has joined the cast of "Rock of Ages" as Tom Cruise's love interest, the film's director confirmed on Twitter.

In the musical movie adaptation, Akerman will play Constance, a journalist who intends to write an expose on Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) but ends up in bed with the rocker after singing a duet of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is."

Director Adam Shankman was courting actresses Amy Adams for the role, but the actress will reportedly not be able to join the cast due to her casting in "Man of Steel." The role was also offered to Anne Hathaway, who turned it down because of her prior commitment to "The Dark Knight Rises," portraying Catwoman.

"After Batman stole Anne Hathaway, and Superman gobbled up Amy Adams, I finally cast my Constance Stack: welcome to #rockofagesmovie Malin Akerman!" Shankman wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

Akerman had her first starring role opposite Ben Stiller in "The Heartbreak Kid." She also had roles in "27 Dresses," "The Proposal" and "The Bang Bang Club." The Sweden-born actress is the lead singer in the band The Petalstones and married the band's Italian drummer Roberto Zincone in 2007.

It was announced last week that "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston had signed on to play the mayor of Los Angeles. It was announced in April that Catherine Zeta-Jones had joined the cast as an "arch-conservative" villain and Russell Brand had joined the cast as Lonny, who runs the '80s rock club The Bourbon and is also the narrator in the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. Brand will be singing a duet of REO Speedwagon with Alec Baldwin, who signed on the play Dennis Dupree, an ex-rocker who owns the Rock of Ages nightclub and can't let go of the past.

In March, it was announced that Paul Giamatti had signed on to play the manager of the rock band headed by Tom Cruise's Stacee Jaxx character.

Shankman, who also directed the musical film re-make of "Hairspray," announced on his Twitter on Wednesday that "Rock of Ages" would be released on June 1, 2012 and that rehearsals will start in two weeks. The Twitter-happy director also announced Baldwin's inclusion in the cast on the micro-blogging social network site.

It was previously announced that "Dancing With the Stars" professional Julianne Hough would play opposite Cruise as Sherrie, a small-town girl who catches the eye of Cruise's character Stacee Jaxx, a rock star at the top of his career. Hough may also be seen in some provocative outfits since the character of Sherrie becomes a stripper.

The film will be based off the hit Broadway musical which featured classic 80s hair rock hits from bands like Journey, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister. Cruise's character is expected to sing Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." His character is also a part of other several other musical numbers . The Broadway musical starred "American Idol" alum Constantine Maroulis.

The film is slated to begin shooting in May. Mary J. Blige has also signed on to the project to play a character named Justice.
