Madonna sued over her and teen daughter's 'Material Girl' line, which is on sale at Macy's
Madonna has been slapped with a lawsuit from apparel manufacturer LA Triumph over the rights to use the "Material Girl" name for her and her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes' juniors clothing line that is currently on sale at Macy's department stores.
The company says it has marketed clothes under the title since 1997 and that it "faces "a risk of being subsumed by Madonnas profile, obvious worldwide notoriety" and massive marketing campaign," People magazine quoted a lawyer for LA Triumph as saying.
Madonna and Macy's have not commented on the lawsuit.
Taylor Momsen, a 17-year-old Gossip Girl actress, stars in the ads for the "Material Girl" line, which is named after Madonna's hit 1985 song and inspired by her punk style from the 1980s and designer Stella McCartney. The collection, which includes clothing, jeans, shoes, fingerless gloves and more, debuted on August 3.
Momsen recently described the style of one of her personal outfits, not affiliated with the "Material Girl' line, as "high-class hooker", in comments made to SPIN magazine.
"I always have two reactions when Lola comes into my room with an outfit on," Madonna had said in a promotional video for the "Material Girl" line, using her daughter's nickname. "One is, 'Oh my God she looks amazing, what incredible style,' and my second reaction is, 'She's dressed completely inappropriately for school.'"
The collection is from a joint venture between Madonna and Iconix Brand Group, which owns Bongo, Joe Boxer and other brands.
Madonna, who became a fashion icon, has in the past put her name behind a collection at H&M fashion stores.
