Madonna reacts to daughter Lourdes smoking: 'I wasn't happy'
Madonna is speaking out about a photo of her 15-year-old daughter that's creating a lot of buzz.
Lourdes Leon, the singer's oldest child, was recently photographed smoking a cigarette. Madonna, known for her own rebellious behavior, expressed her disapproval about it in an interview on NBC's "Rock Center".
"[I] wasn't very happy," she said, as seen in a preview clip that aired on the "Today" show on Wednesday, April 17. "Honestly, I don't think I'm as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher."
"It's hard though - every day is a negotiation," she continued. "But cigarette smoking I'm not very fond of - for anyone. I don't approve of anyone smoking cigarettes - most of all, my daughter."
The "Material Girl" singer can be seen smoking a cigarette in her new video, "Girl Gone Wild," which is raising speculation in light of her recent comments (Watch below). The performer clarified that she doesn't smoke.
"I don't smoke," she said. That cigarette was "just an accessory ... there's a difference. [Lourdes] smoked that cigarette before I did that video. She didn't get that from me."
The 53-year-old went on to explain the difficulty in maintaining her pop star status while single-handedly raising a family.
"It must be hard because I complain all the time," she said. "I mean I think it's hard, we all have our challenges, to be a single mother of four and to work as much as I do, I live my life in a kind of metaphorical fishbowl - it's pretty challenging, yeah. But so far I've survived with sanity and humor intact."
Madonna released her 12th studio album, "MDNA," in March. The record contains the single "Give Me All Your Luvin'" which features M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj, as well as "Girl Gone Wild." She is also set to begin a world tour, starting in Israel, in May. Check out the tour dates here.
In February, Madonna's daughter Leon made headlines when she showcased a very edgy haircut. The young fashion blogger stepped out in New York City with the side of her head shaved, leaving the rest of her locks long.
