'Madagascar 3' tops Friday's box office, beating out 'Rock of Ages'
"Madagascar 3" maintained its No. 1 spot in Friday's box office, beating out new arrivals - "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy."
"Madagascar 3" earned another $10 million on Friday, bringing its domestic cume to about $95 million. The DreamWorks Animation CGI family film features the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer as zoo animals. In the most recent movie, the zoo animals continue their journey by joining a circus.
Despite its star-studded cast, "Rock of Ages" earned a disappointing $5.4 million and is expected to gross around $16 million over the Father's Day weekend. The musical comedy placed third in Friday's box office.
"Rock of Ages" is based on a Broadway musical, whose cast recording does not feature songs from Rose or his band Guns N' Roses. It does, however, include tracks from other "hair metal" and '80s rock legends such as Twisted Sister, whose lead singer Dee Snider starred in the stage show, Poison, Whitesnake, Foreigner, Journey, Joan Jett and Def Leppard, which released the title song "Rock of Ages" in 1983.
The film is directed by Adam Shankman, who directed the musical movie remake of "Hairspray." In "Rock of Ages," Julianne Hough plays main character Sherrie Christian, a small town girl who has moved to Los Angeles to pursue singing. She has the hots for Jaxx and aspiring rocker Drew Boley, portrayed by Diego Boneta.
Adam Sandler's comedy "That's My Boy" grossed $4.6 million on Friday and is expected to earn around $13 million for the weekend.
Sandler stars as Donny Berger, a man who fathered a son when he was 13 with his teacher (Eva Amurri Martino / Susan Sarandon). Donny's son Todd (Samberg), cut ties with his father after his 18th birthday and 12 years later, is getting ready to marry his fiancee (Leighton Meester). Donny finds out about his son's wedding and tries to reconnect with him to hopefully get help to avoid being jailed for failing to pay $43,000 to the IRS.
In second place is the sci-fi action film "Prometheus," earning another $5.8 million on Friday, for a cume of $74.4 million. The film, which stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, tells the story of a team of explorers who discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, which leads them to a journey to the darkest corners of the universe and a battle to save the future of mankind.
This weekend's final, albeit limited release was "Your Sister's Sister" which stars Mark Duplass as Jack, who goes to stay at his friend Iris' (Emily Blunt) family's getaway after his brother dies. At the cabin, he has a drunken encounter with Iris' sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), which causes problems for the friendship.
