Lou Reed, Velvet Underground guitarist, dies at age 71

Lou Reed, legendary rock star and guitarist from the group Velvet Underground, has died at the age of 71, OTRC.com can confirm.

The cause of the rocker's death was not immediately known. The musician's publicist confirmed the news of Reed's death on Sunday, Oct. 27. People Magazine reports Reed underwent liver transplant surgery in May 2013.

Reed was best known as a part of New York City's thriving art and music scene of the 1960s as a founding member of the group, Velvet Underground. The group's album, "The Velvet Underground & Nico" is considered to be one of the most influential rock albums of all time.

Reed also achieved success as a songwriter and solo artist, with hit songs such as "Wild Side" produced by David Bowie.

Numerous celebrities expressed their condolences for the loss of the rock star over Twitter -- including Elijah Wood who tweeted, "May you forever walk on the wild side, Lou Reed. Terribly sad to hear of your passing" and Samuel L. Jackson, who wrote, " R.I.P. Lou Reed. Just met at the GQ Awards. The music of my generation. Still Relevant!"
