Country music legend Loretta Lynn was hospitalized over the weekend with the early stages of pneumonia, according to the Associated Press.

The 76-year-old singer was set to perform on Saturday, October 22, at the Performing Arts Center in Ashland, Kentucky, and Sunday in Durham, North Carolina, but the Kentucky center issued a news release saying she is in the hospital and would be unable to perform. The show will be rescheduled.

A statement was issued on the Lynn's website on Saturday regarding the signer's cancelled shows and illness.

"Loretta regretfully must cancel her shows for Ashland Ky, and Durahm, NC for this weekend, due to illness. Doctors have diagnosed her as the beginning stages pneumonia, and will continue to need rest," the statement said. "Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates."

This is not the first time this year that Lynn has had to cancel a series of shows. In August, she canceled tour dates because of knee surgery, according to the wire service. Before that, she was forced to cancel shows in Ohio and Connecticut because she was hospitalized for heat exhaustion.

Lynn has had several hits in a career that spans over 50 years, starting with "Coal Miner's Daughter" in 1969. Other hit songs include "You Ain't Woman Enough," "The Pill" and "One's on the Way." Many of her songs reflected her pride in her humble background as the daughter of a Kentucky coal miner and her experiences as a wife and mother.

In 1980 the singer's life was featured into a biopic starring Sissy Spacek as Lynn. The film was based off Lynn's 1977 autobiography and the role earned Spacek's an Oscar for Best Actress.

Lynn is up for a Country Music Association award next month for her collaboration with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert on a new edition of "Coal Miner's Daughter."

The 45th annual CMA awards will air live November 9 from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on ABC.
