The 24-year-old actress told Vanity Fair in that when she first moved from New York to Los Angeles, she "was about I was 18, 19with a ton of money and no one really here to tell me that I couldnt do certain things," adding: "I see where thats gotten me now, and I dont like it."

Lohan, who served less than two weeks out of a 90-day jail sentence and a little more than three weeks out of a 90-day rehab stint for violating probation in a 2007 drunken driving case, said that back then, tabloids were her main source of news, which she called really scary and sad."

"I would look up to those girls ... the Britneys and whatever. And I would be like, I want to be like that, she said.

Lohan, who completed several stints in rehabilitation programs before her July sentence for alcohol and reported substance abuse, says she has "never abused prescription drugs."

"I have no desire to," she said. "Thats not who I am. Ive admitted to the things that Ive done - to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, O.K., cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it.

Her mother Dina had said on August 13 that after her release, Lohan would move back home to New York. The actress, who is currently receiving outpatient care in Los Angeles as part of the conditions of her probation, has not commented.

Lohan pleaded guilty in 2007 to being under the influence of cocaine, no contest to driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent and reckless driving.

A judge had ruled Lohan had missed some court-mandated weekly alcohol education classes and therefore violated the terms of her probation. Her attorney Shawn Chapman Holley had called the ruling "harsh and unfair" and Lohan's mother said the judge "played hardball" with the actress.

Lohan's new action film, Machete, which stars Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and Michelle Rodriguez, is set for release on September 3.

"I dont care what anyone says," Lohan said. "I know that Im a damn good actress. And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible - but thats what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes."
