Lenny Kravitz talks about his surprising interior decorating gig
Lenny Kravitz released his ninth studio album, "Black and White America" on August 30, but the rock star has a surprising day job between promoting the release and touring.
"It all started when I was a little kid and I used to make my room - I always had to have it in a particular way," Kravitz said on NBC's "Today Show" on September 2. "Then later, after I got my record deal and I had a home and I started buying furniture, I couldn't find certain things that I wanted, that I envisioned, and so I started making them myself."
The 47-year-old singer owns an interior design company and told "Today Show" co-host Ann Curry that he's working on two projects in Miami.
"That's my day gig," Kravitz said. "I have always been into it. I started a firm about 13 years ago and began doing things. Now I am doing this 46-story tower in Miami called Paramount Bay which is an amazing project."
He is also collaborating with famed designer Philippe Stark on a new SLS Hotel in Miami, Florida, which is slated to open in 2012. Kravitz said he will be tackling the top floor of the hotel's Presidential Suite.
"I see leisure time as any time I'm doing something else," he continued. "If I'm on tour and have an afternoon off to work on a design project, that's leisure. Whatever I'm feeling or what the time allows -- that's what I do."
The new album, "Black And White America," is Kravitz's first new musical effort since 2008's "It is Time for a Love Revolution," and includes collaborations with rappers Drake and Jay-Z.
"All my albums are positive, but there's usually at least one song with a sadness or deep darkness, Kravitz told USA Today. "But this one is completely happy. My life has never been better."
Up next, Kravitz will appear in "The Hunger Games" as Cinna, the stylist and confidant of the film's lead hero Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence.
"I have 100 percent faith in director Gary Ross and his vision is right on and I think people are going to be blown away," Kravitz said on the "Today" show.
Lawrence co-starred alongside Kravitz's daughter, Zoe Kravitz, in the 2011 summer film "X-Men: First Class." Zoe Kravitz is the musician's daughter with actress Lisa Bonet. The young couple eloped in 1987, when Kravitz was 23 and Bonet was 20. The two later divorced in 1993.
