Lenny Kravitz received a top award in France on Wednesday, November 30, when the singer was given the country's highest award, the Legion of Honor, according to The Associated Press.

The 47-year-old singer-songwriter was hailed by Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand at a Paris ceremony who told Kravitz "you freed yourself of the barriers between black and white sound."

Kravitz reportedly told the wire service that his first break into the music industry was at a 1989 music festival in the western French city of Rennes. Kravitz claims the gig transformed his career "overnight" and added, "I know it sounds like a fairy tale but it's true."

The singer released his ninth studio album called "Black And White America" on August 30. It included collaborations with rappers Drake and Jay-Z.

The album was Kravitz's first new musical effort since 2008's "It is Time for a Love Revolution." The rocker initially set out to finish an album called "Negrophilia," a long-time project of his, but the 47-year-old became inspired to take a new direction.

The musician himself is multiracial, the son of black actress Roxie Roker of "The Jeffersons" fame and Sy Kravitz, an NBC television news producer of Russian Jewish descent.

The singer has also ventured into interior design. Kravitz owns an interior design company and he is also collaborating with famed designer Philippe Stark on a new SLS Hotel in Miami, Florida, which is slated to open in 2012. Kravitz said he will be tackling the top floor of the hotel's Presidential Suite.

Up next, Kravitz will appear in "The Hunger Games" as Cinna, the stylist and confidant of the film's lead hero Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence.
