Leighton Meester to leave 'Gossip Girl'?
Leighton Meester says she does not know if she will continue to star in "Gossip Girl" in two years, when her contract expires.
Meester, 24, plays socialite Blair Waldorf on the CW teen series, which depicts the drama-filled lives of Manhattan's elite. The show began airing in 2007 and is based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar.
"It's funny, somebody recently asked me, 'What's your future beyond 'Gossip Girl?' and I said, 'I don't know, it's a couple years from now,'" Meester told Parade magazine.
"And then after that everyone was saying, 'What's happening? Is the show ending?' But the truth is, I really don't know," Meester added. "That's not at all what I meant. I meant that our contracts are up in a couple years. I do know that they've talked about a movie, but I have no idea if that's a reality. I think we're just taking it one episode at a time and trying to make it as good as we can, and I think we're doing a good job. We still have season 5 and 6 left."
"Gossip Girl" also stars Blake Lively as Waldorf's best friend Serena and Ed Westwick as Waldorf's womanizing, on-again, off-again boyfriend. Westwick was recently quoted by Tatler magazine as saying he is "ready to do something else" regarding his acting career. Both Meester and Lively have nabbed major film roles in the last few years.
Last year, Lively starred in Ben Affleck's movie "The Town." Meester recently appeared alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw in the film "Country Strong" and stars with Minka Kelly in the new thriller "The Roommate," which is set for release on Friday, February 4.
