LeAnn Rimes sues California teacher for invasion of privacy
LeAnn Rimes filed a $25,000 lawsuit against two women who she claims illegally tape-recorded her during a phone conversation.
The lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on August 30, claims that Kimberly and Lexi Smiley "conspired to spitefully ensure that out-of-context excerpts of that recording would be disseminated to the public... in an effort to portray Ms. Rimes in an egregiously false and negative light and cause her emotional distress," according to the Associated Press.
It is illegal in California to record a private conversation without all parties knowledge. Rimes stated in her case that the two women have harassed her for several years.
The leaked conversation, which took place last spring and was posted online, depicts Rimes arguing with a former Twitter follower about her husband's ex-wife, Brandi Glanville. The speaker, Kimberly Smiley, defended Glanville and insisted that the reality star had done nothing wrong to Rimes.
Smiley, a Northern California teacher and mother of four, has denied the lawsuit's claims and said that she was the one being bullied by Rimes.
"She called me," Smiley told Radar Online. "She was trying to berate me into liking her. When she didn't get her way she got frustrated... I plan to take my own action against her... This could impact my family and business. Somebody needs to stand up or LeAnn will continue doing this for the rest of her life."
Rimes and Cibrian, 39, received criticism when they went public with their romance, as the two were both still married when they met on the set of the Lifetime movie, "Northern Lights." Cibrian was still married to Glanville while Rimes was married to Dean Sheremet.
Rimes and Sheremet divorced in June 2010 while Cibrian and Glanville finalized their divorce in October 2010. Cibrian and Glanville have two sons together - 9-year-old Mason and 5-year-old Jake.
Glanville has been open about her negative feelings towards Rimes in the past, but the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star asked fans on Twitter to "stop hating."
Rimes had entered a 30-day treatment facility on August 29, to deal with anxiety and stress. The singer turned 30 years old the day before seeking treatment.
"LeAnn has voluntarily entered a 30 day in-patient treatment facility to cope with anxiety and stress," her rep Marcel Pariseau told People magazine. "While there will be speculation regarding her treatment, she is simply there to learn and develop coping mechanisms. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."A source told People magazine that the lawsuit is "a part of, but certainly not the only reason LeAnn has sought treatment."
Rimes and Cibrian moved in together in the summer of 2010 and got engaged in December 2010. The two wed on April 22, 2011 in a small ceremony in Malibu, California. They renewed their vows on April 27.
Weeks after their wedding, Rimes posted photos of herself in bikinis and raised concern among many that she may have lost too much weight.
Rimes has often defended her body and diet, especially on her Twitter account, which she often updates several times an hour and uses to chat with fans and critics.
