Lauren Alaina flubs national anthem at Lions-Packers game, skips 'Twilight's'
You can add "American Idol" finalist Lauren Alaina to the list of celebrities who flubbed part of the national anthem at a sporting event.
The 17-year-old country singer, who placed second on "American Idol" during the recent 10th season, forgot the lyrics about 17 seconds after she began to sing the "Star-Spangled Banner" at the NFL game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.
She sang the word "through" instead of "at" and just before reaching the word "Twilight's," she paused for a moment, skipped the word and continued from the phrase "last gleaming." She then finished the national anthem and was met with thundering applause.
"Thank you everyone for the kind words," Alaina Tweeted. "But the truth is I messed up. I'm gonna spend the rest of the day being thankful for all my blessings."
"American Idol" season 5 finalist Kellie Pickler, also a country singer, was among those who sent Alaina words of encouragement online, Tweeting: "@Lauren_Alaina HEY DOLL! YOU HANDLED YOURSELF LIKE A PRO! SEND THE BULLIES MY WAY & I'LL TELL EM' WHERE TO GO! XO :)"
Christina Aguilera famously flubbed a line from the "Star-Spangled Banner" at the 2011 Super Bowl. She told Ellen DeGeneres she had a "really good laugh" about the incident. Scotty McCreery, who beat Alaina to win "American Idol, appeared to also sing the wrong lyrics when he sang the national anthem during Game 1 of the 2011 World Series baseball championship in October.
