Lady Gaga's meat dress was made out of real meat, designer says about MTV VMAs outfit
Lady Gaga's controversial dress from the MTV Video Music Awards was made out of real meat and was not synthetic as previously reported, the outfit's designer says.
"The dress is indeed real meat from my family butcher," Franc Fernandez told MTV News. "Glad it went so well."
"Gay Veterans were my VMA dates," Lady Gaga Tweeted. "Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell."
The animal rights group PETA condemned the singer's dress, as well as a meat bikini she wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. Lady Gaga said on The Ellen Degeneres Show she did not mean to cause disrespect to vegans or vegetarians by wearing a meat outfit.
"As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth," she said. "However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening ... If we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And I am not a piece of meat."
Lady Gaga's outfit prompted a satirical skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which featured host Jimmy Kimmel's sidekick Guillermo to appear in what appeared to be a Speedo swimsuit covered in meat, while eating cold cuts. When asked what happened to the rest of his outfit, he said he ate it.
Lady Gaga's MTV VMAs outfit was also praised by Cher, who presented her with the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year for "Bad Romance". Lady Gaga won eight awards on Sunday.
