Lady Gaga talks 'Applause' clown makeup, Katy Perry: 5 highlights
Lady Gaga recently made several colorful appearances on the streets of Los Angeles, sporting clown-like makeup to promote her new single, "Applause," and talked to Ryan Seacrest and Carson Daly on their radio shows about her new album, "ARTPOP."
The 27-year-old pop star also referenced Katy Perry -- who is also promoting a new song, her recent hip injury -- which forced her to cut short a tour, her purchase of tour outfits worn by Michael Jackson before his 2009 death and filming projects in the nude.
"Applause" was released on Monday (LISTEN to it here), following a leak Lady Gaga blamed on hackers, while "ARTPOP" hits stores on Nov. 11. On Aug. 25, the singer will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards and on Sept. 1, she plans to perform an hour of new music at the iTunes Festival -- which will be streamed live. She is also promoting a new documentary film filmed by Terry Richardson, who also shot footage of her hip surgery.
Check out five highlights from Lady Gaga's raduo interviews below. Also check out PHOTOS of Lady Gaga appearing in public with clown-like makeup.
1. The significance of her clown-like makeup ...
"It's the makeup from the cover for the single 'Applause,' she said on the syndicated KIIS-FM show "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" in an interview that aired on Tuesday.
"We did this makeup for the set for the video, which is going to come out next week on [ABC's] 'Good Morning America,' and during the film. We were shooting and I had this sort of clown makeup on my face and then, as I was singing, I got very passionate and frustrated 'cause I really missed my fans and my hip breaking and everything that happened on tour and the tour stopping that quickly was really difficult for all of us."
"So I got very emotional during the video shoot and I took my hands and I smeared the makeup down my face to look like tears and it became one of our favorite scenes in the video and so we used it for the 'Applause' cover and I decided today ... to wear the makeup.'"
2. On Katy Perry ...
Perry released her own new single, "Roar," just before Gaga. She told Seacrest it was coincidental.
"It's not necessarily convenient for everyone and maybe a little bit awkward but we don't need to force-feed this negativity into it until everybody explodes," she said, referring to public assumptions of a rivalry. "I mean, it just turns it into a competition and it's not what I'm about at all."
"I really like Katy Perry and I really like her fans and I really respect everyone in this industry because it was really hard for me to get here and I'm sure it wasn't easy for her to get where she is, so I just wanted to kind of put an end to it before it started."
3. The meaning of "ARTPOP" ...
Lady Gaga said on Daly's show, when asked to describe her new album: "'We' 'Could' 'Belong' 'Together.' That's how I would describe the album."
4. On filming things in the nude ...
In recent weeks, Lady Gaga has appeared naked or scantily-clad in an online video promoting performance artist Marina Abramovic's "Abramovic Method," in a promotional photo for "ARTPOP," in a V magazine photo shoot and while walking with boyfriend Taylor Kinney outside the Chateau Marmont hotel in West Hollywood, California. She told Daly that she also appears nude in her new documentary.
"There's a lot of nudity," she said. "Because that's how I work. I work naked and smoking and drinking and writing. I like to feel free."
Lady Gaga filmed her video for Abramovic in a forest and told Daly: "I had thorns, I had bites all over me -- spider bites. I was itching for a week."
She told Seacrest that while she was filming her video for Abramovic, her "mentor," she was left stranded alone as part of an exercise.
"She left me in the woods for three hours blindfolded and I had to find my way home," the singer said. "I kept walking toward a cliff so she kept grabbing me."
5. On her fashion style -- and buying Michael Jackson's tour outfits ...
"It's funny 'cause I know so much of what you think of what I do is a statement, but many times I'm not making a statement at all," Lady Gaga told Seacrest.
"I recently bought a bunch of Michael Jackson's stuff," she said. "His actual clothes from his tours. A whole bunch of them. So the idea was to keep them for him and I actually don't really want to wear them ... because they're Michael's clothes. I have one of his sweaters that I put on and I wear that when we're mixing and finishing up the record."
"I feel something from the clothing and I gave one of the sweaters to his godson, Evan Ross, and he really loved that. I just feel like through clothes, you can feel things. I wouldn't choose an outfit based on how it looks -- I would choose it based on how it felt."
