Lady Gaga has built a career on encouraging fans to accept themselves as they were "Born That Way," but now she is under fire after tweeting that "Pop Stars Don't Eat." "Just killed back to back spin classes," Gaga Tweeted on April 10. "Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay." Lady Gaga's fans, who she refers to as her little monsters, immediately fired back at the pop star, some demanding a boycott. One user wrote, "dear @ladygaga, you just blatantly endorsed anorexia to over 22 million followers. how do you sleep at night?" The National Eating Disorders Association also took to Twitter, replying to the post, "Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?" The 26-year-old pop star has admitted to struggling with an eating disorder in the past, while speaking at the "It's Our Turn" young women's conference in February, Gaga said, "I used to throw up all the time in high school." Gaga told the crowd of young women at Los Angeles' Brentwood School that she stopped purging because of the damage it did to her vocal chords, she still struggles with weight issues and has since she was "a voluptuous little Italian girl whose dad had meatballs on the table every night." Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was adamant that young women shouldn't feel pressured to lose weight adding, "The dieting wars have got to stop. Everyone just knock it off. Because at the end of the day, it's affecting kids your age - and it's making girls sick." Lady Gaga has yet to respond to the controversy over her Tweet. Her silence regarding the backfire might be part of the singer's self-prescribed media silence. In March, Lady Gaga told Oprah Winfrey during her special on "Oprah's Next Chapter" that she did not "intend to speak to anyone [in the media] for a very long time."
