Lady Gaga debuts 'slutty' fragrance 'Fame,' holds unusual launch event
Lady Gaga hosted a launch event for the release of her fragrance "Fame," which she described as "slutty," in New York's Guggenheim Museum on September 13.
In typical Gaga fashion, the affair was far from ordinary. A number of celebrities turned out for the unique event, including Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and designer Michael Kors (Photos). Retired NFL star Michael Strahan of the ABC morning show "LIVE! With Kelly and Michael" was also in attendance, and described the event to the viewers.
"There's shape of her bottle and the light comes on and she's in the bottle. Sleeping. Sleeping!" he said on the morning show on September 14. "People get in the line, and there was a little cutout in the bottle, and people could reach through the bottle and touch her hand as she slept."
The black tie masquerade event featured a performance art piece by Lady Gaga, "Sleeping with Gaga," and the unveiling of the film "Lady Gaga Fame," which was directed by Steven Klein. The singer is known for her unique stunts - she famously arrrived at the 2011 Grammy Awards inside a giant egg and wore a dress made out of meat to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
"And then she got a tattoo," Strahan continued. And she came and sprayed perfume all over the room."
Gaga got an image of a winged cherub inked on the back of her head at the event, in the bald area where she shaved her head in honor of her friend Terry Richardson's mother's passing.
Gaga posted a photo to her LittleMonsters site showing her hair tied up in a bun and part of the back of her head shaved in a triangular shape. She wrote in the caption, "I did it for u Terry," referring to photographer Richardson, "I'm sorry about ure mommy. She has princess die, but were all princess high."
Strahan's co-host, Kelly Ripa, asked Strahan what the singer's perfume smells like. He responded: "Smells like money to me!"
Gaga appeared on the ABC show "Good Morning America" on September 14, and explained what she wanted her individual fragrance to represent.
"I wanted it to be a very slutty perfume," she told correspondent Lara Spencer. "Because that is sort of the addictive nature of fame is that it is, it is seductive ... You want the life of the person who is famous."
"I wanted a fragrance that was desirable, and which is quite nice for not only just, you know, a young girl like me, but for any woman that wants to go home to their husband and lay down and feel like a queen," she added.
The performer, who is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, said she drew inspiration from growing up with her mother who she dubbed "very sexual."
"My mother was always a sexy woman to me, very sexual, sensual woman," she said. "And my father always thought she was sexy. And, you know, they weren't always private about, you know, hugging and kissing each other in front of us. And it was something that my sister and I really enjoyed to see."
In July, Gaga Tweeted a photo of the bottle for the fragrance. "Photo from Haus Laboratories of Le Masterpiece FAME: the premiere edition my fragrance," she wrote. "Cap is solid metal not plastic."
She also revealed there would be two versions of the fragrance available, an inexpensive version to be sold for $30 and a larger bottle, which she calls "Le Masterpiece," for "over" $70.
Gaga also recently revealed the name of her upcoming album, which will be called "ARTPOP." No release date has been announced.
