Kristin Kreuk: New 'Beauty and the Beast' TV series is 'totally away from the Disney version'
Kristin Kreuk says the new "Beauty and the Beast" television series she stars in is nothing like the Disney version with singing candle sticks and a light-hearted tone.
"We're totally away from the Disney version," Kreuk told OnTheRedCarpet.com at Comic-Con on July 12. "We're more [like a] graphic novel."
The 29-year-old actress stars in the new series as Catherine Chandler, an NYPD homicide detective. Chandler witnessed the murder of her mother years ago and was saved by a mysterious beast that attacked her mother's killers.
She later becomes close to the beast, named Vincent (played by Jay Ryan). He was a military veteran who was turned into a beast after a failed experiment.
"It's going to be more like a graphic novel, very dark, lots of stunt work," Ryan said.
The 30-year-old actor is a New Zealand native and has previously starred in the television series "Terra Nova." He revealed to OnTheRedCarpet.com that he spends up to four hours a day in make-up to get his beastly look.
The new show is loosely based on the 1987 series of the same name that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. Ron Koslow, who created the original 1980's series will serve as an Executive Producer on the series.
"I think that ours is so different. It's very modern, we're in New York City, we're in present day, we're dealing with regular crime stuff," Kreuk said. "Also his storyline, the beast's back story, is I think is plausible in a sense, you know."
Kreuk is best known for her role as Lana Lang, Clark Kent aka Superman's love interest before he met Lois Lane in "Smallville." The show, which starred Tom Welling as Clark Kent, ended its 10-year run on May 13, 2011.
The 29-year-old Canadian actress has also appeared on NBC's "Chuck" and in films like "EuroTrip," "Partition," "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," "Vampire" and "Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy."
Kreuk is also no stranger to the fairy tale genre, having played Snow White in ABC's 2002 TV movie, "Snow White: The Fairest of Them All."
"Beauty and the Beast" premieres on October 11 at 9 p.m. on The CW. Check out a preview below.
