Kristen Wiig joins 'Anchorman 2' cast, Ron Burgundy approves (Poll)
Kristen Wiig has joined the cast of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" -- with the blessing of Ron Burgundy himself.
Her participation was confirmed by Adam McKay, the film's director and main star Will Ferrell's longtime writing partner and friend.
"Just found out Kristen Wiig officially on board for Anchorman 2. Cannonball!" he Tweeted on Monday.
Details about Wiig's role was not disclosed and she has not commented.
The 2004 cult comedy film "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" was written by Ferrell and McKay and was set in the 1970s. The movie made $90.5 million worldwide. Ferrell plays Burgundy, a sexist, dimwitted and hilariously offensive San Diego news anchor whose ego is as large as his mustache.
On Tuesday, February 5, McKay reTweeted a message from Burgundy's official Twitter account, which read: "Kristen Wiig is officially on board for A2. She's a top notch talent with a high motor. And I hear she has a great set of buns."
In the first film, Burgundy leads his male co-workers in street brawls with competing news teams and - in traditional Ferrell-McKay fashion - in song. He reads aloud what is displayed on the teleprompter without reviewing a script, allowing for hilarious bloopers, and insists on being the person to end a newscast, by uttering his token phrase, "Say classy, San Diego."
Judd Apatow is the producer of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" and also produced several films starring Wiig, including "Knocked Up," "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," "Adventureland," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and the 2011 comedy "Bridesmaids," which earned the actress an Oscar nomination for screenwriting.
Both Wiig and Ferrell are former cast members of "Saturday Night Live," where McKay also worked as a writer. The actress and Ferrell also presented an award together at the 2013 Golden Globes earlier this month (see 9 best moments from the ceremony) and co-starred in the 2008 comedy "Semi Pro."
Wiig joins returning "Anchorman" stars Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Steve Carell.
"So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for anchorman2," Tweeted Applegate, who played Burgundy's love interest and nemesis Veronica Corningstone in the first film." "Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made."
