Kim Richards of 'Real Housewives' on alcoholism: I drank to cover the shame
Kim Richards has opened up about her problems in her first post-rehab interview, set to air as part of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" three-part reunion special.
"I had so much guilt and shame for my behavior," Richards told Bravo's Andy Cohen, according to Life & Style magazine. "Then I drank to cover the guilt and shame and make it go away. It's a vicious cycle."
In the interview, set to air as the third part of the reunion special on February 13, at 9 p.m. on Bravo, Richards talks to host Andy Cohen after her recent rehab stint. A brief clip can be seen below.
When asked by Cohen why she checked into rehab, Richards admits, "I'm an alcoholic. I'm an alcoholic."
"I just didn't like me anymore," Richards continued. "I couldn't look at myself in the mirror."
Richards reportedly left rehab in January, after seeking treatment for alcohol abuse and other "serious issues." She initially entered an undisclosed treatment center on December 5.
"I've struggled with it, and I've been working on it for a while. I am a person who has done it and relapsed and done it [again]," Richards confessed. "I'm really trying."
Other cast members of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" taped the reunion show on January 5. Host and Bravo executive Cohen said in his blog it was "high drama, lots of emotion, and some fun and laughs too."
Richards' drinking problems led to a dramatic point in the show's first season finale when her sister Kyle confronted her about the problem in a limousine. Richards has also shown erratic behavior in several episodes this season.
In an October episode of the show's second season, new cast member Brandi Glanville -- who is Eddie Cibrian's ex-wife -- accused Richards of being "wasted" during the group's game night. Glanville and Richards had a shouting match over the accusation.
During an episode that aired on January 16, viewers saw Richards acting erratic and locking herself in the bathroom while getting ready to go to the opening of cast member Lisa Vanderpump's restaurant Sur.
By the end of the episode, Kim Richards became emotional and admitted to her sister Kyle that her relationship with boyfriend Ken was on the rocks.
Richards is a former child actress who starred in "Nanny and the Professor" and "Escape to Witch Mountain." She is the younger sister of Kathy Hilton who is Paris Hilton's mother.
Kathy Hilton told Us Weekly last week that Richards has been "doing well" and "fabulous" after her rehab stint.
