Kim Kardashian for mayor? Glendale city council member extends job offer (Exclusive)
Kim Kardashian just got a job offer that could bring her closer to fulfilling her new goal of becoming mayor of Glendale, California.
The 31-year-old, a popular E! reality star and Los Angeles socialite, announced on a segment of her sister Khloe's E! reality show, "Khloe & Lamar," that she wanted to run for the position in five years, citing how the city is known for its large population of people of Armenian heritage. Her late father was a third generation Armenian-American.
City council member and former mayor Ara Najarian told OnTheRedCarpet.com on Tuesday, April 17, that her declaration was "very exciting" and that he had reached out to Kardashian's rep to offer the reality star the chance to become his honorary chief deputy, "so she can get a few years under her belt in understanding and getting acquainted with the city."
Kardashian, who lives about 15 miles away in Beverly Hills, has not responded to his offer but her reps confirmed she received it.
"Kim has always looked for opportunities to grow and also do what she can to help and support the Armenian community," a spokesperson for the reality star told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "She's learning more about ways in which she can help to do her part to make a difference in the community."
Najarian told OnTheRedCarpet.com if she accepts the position of honorary chief deputy, she would not get paid but her schedule would be flexible.
"I know Kim is busy all over the world and all that but if she's able to come in a few days a week or a few days a month to see how the city works and see all the great things we do ... if she wants to learn how Glendale runs this is really the best way to do it," he said, adding: "We're hoping to have her involvement with our annual [Armenian] Genocide commemoration event takes place next week.
Kardashian's spokesperson said the reality star is not available to attend and that she told Najarian so. Kardashian has spoken out about the 1915 mass killing of some 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War I. In April 2011, just before the 96th anniversary of its starting date, she said on her blog: "My thoughts and prayers are with all my fellow Armenians on this really important day. I stand proud with you always."
The Glendale City Clerk's Office has not received any inquiries from potential candidates for the next municipal election, which takes place in 2017, a spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com. The mayor is selected following a vote of city council members, who are elected in a city-wide ballot every two years. The last election took place in 2011.
Candidates for the city council must be registered voters and reside in Glendale. Kardashian had told her sister during their exchange that she had to buy a house in the city.
"I think she'd be a great candidate," the current mayor of Glendale, Frank Quintero, told OnTheRedCarpet.com.
Another city council member, Rafi Manoukian, said Kardashian would make "an excellent mayor."
Najarian said that the most famous celebrity to ever run for office in Glendale was former mayor Bob Wian, the late founder of the restaurant chain Bob's Big Boy, whose original branch in the city is a California landmark. If Kardashian does go through with her political plans, she may also find herself facing some celebrity competition. Najarian said TV personality Mario Lopez, who resides in Glendale and has been involved in community events, has continuously "expressed an intent" to run for local office. His spokesperson said Lopez had no such interest at the moment.
