Kevin Spacey to play cult leader in HBO series 'The Crux'?

Kevin Spacey in the 2008 TV film 'Recount' (Photo credit: Everyman Pictures / HBO) Kevin Spacey is reportedly nearing a deal to play a "charismatic cult leader" in a drama series called The Crux that would air on the cable network HBO, which often features adult-oriented material and strong language.

The show will be set in Los Angeles and will follow the life of a man who leads a "multibillion dollar worldwide cult," Rod Lurie, who plans to direct the pilot, told Variety. He added that he was impressed at how Spacey fleshed out the character during recent meetings and said: "It really is a perfect marriage between an actor and a role."

Spacey, who is 51 and known for his performances in films such as American Beauty and The Usual Suspects, has not commented on the report.

Lurie, an Israeli-born former film critic who grew up in the United States, directed episodes of Commander in Chief with Geena Davis as well as the films Nothing But the Truth with Kate Beckinsale and the upcoming Straw Dogs, which stars  Alexander Skarsgård and Kate Bosworth. The actress starred with Spacey in the 2006 film Superman Returns.

Spacey had a main role in the 2008 HBO television film Recount, which was about the 2000 presidential election. The movie three Emmys.

He can be seen next in the Horrible Bosses, a comedy film set for release in July 2011 and which tells of three friends who conspire to murder their bosses because they feel they stand in the way of their happiness. The movie stars Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Donald Sutherland, Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman and Modern Family's Julie Bowen.
