Kevin Spacey responds to 'gay' rumors
Kevin Spacey recently addressed longtime rumors of homosexuality but has not confirmed whether or not he is gay.
The 51-year-old actor, who is unmarried, won Oscars for his role in the films "American Beauty" and "The Usual Suspects". He recently earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for his part in the movie "Casino Jack", which tells of a Washington, D.C. lobbyist involved in a major corruption scandal and is based on the career of Jack Abramoff, who served more than three years in prison.
Rumors that Spacey may be gay have floated around for years. Spacey has kept his personal life private and is said to have dated women in the past.
When asked by why he does not "proudly claim us back", when told that gay men have "always proudly claimed" him to be part of their "tribe", Spacey told the Daily Beast website: "Look, I might have lived in England for the last several years but I'm still an American citizen and I have not given up my right to privacy.
"People have different reasons for the way they live their lives," he added. "You cannot put everyone's reasons in the same box. It's just a line I've never crossed and never will. I don't live a lie. I am different than some people would like me to be. No one's personal life is in the public interest."
Spacey also said that he would be willing to record a video for the "It Gets Better" campaign to promote awareness about bullying following suicides of bullied gay teenagers earlier this year. Several celebrities have made such videos, including Tim Gunn of the reality show "Project Runway", who is openly gay.
"Yeah. Absolutely. I'd do one of those," Spacey told the Daily Beast. "But why is it in this country that kids might think it's OK to bully and make fun of somebody? I'll tell you why, because what do they see in the media happening all the time? In the media they seem to think that's OK. So if we stop using sexuality as a weapon against people maybe everyone will eventually get cool with it."
"Casino Jack" is set for release on Friday. Kelly Preston, whose actor-husband John Travolta has also been the target of rumors regarding his sexuality, plays Spacey's character's wife. Travolta's lawyer has denied recent tabloid reports that said the actor allegedly had sexual encounters with men in Los Angeles saunas.
Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" films, recently stirred controversy when she told the U.S.-based national gay and lesbian newsmagazine The Advocate: "Wow! I mean, my feeling about John has always been that we know and we don't care", when asked if the actor's legal team should take action.
