Kevin Costner cast in 'Superman' film reboot
Kevin Costner has closed a deal to star in the new Zack Snyder 'Superman' relaunch, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new "Superman" film is tentatively called "Superman: Man of Steel" and is set for release in December 2012. The cast is set to start shooting in Vancouver in late August. Costner's role was confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
"Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time."
It was announced earlier in the month that Diane Lane had been cast as Martha Kent, Clark's adoptive mother. The Kents are the ones who come across the rocket that brought an infant Kal-El (Clark's real name) to Earth and took him in as their son. In earlier Superman comic storylines, the Kents passed away after Clark graduated from high school, but after the 1986 reboot, the Kents continue to aid Superman into adulthood.
It was announced in January that Henry Cavill, a 27-year-old British actor who stars in the Showtime series "The Tudors," will play Superman. Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, the writing team behind "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," are penning the script for the new film and Nolan, who also directed both "Batman" films, is also on board as a producer.
Others who have played Clark Kent's adoptive father on screen include John Schneider who stars in the CW series "Smallvillle," and Eddie Jones who appeared on the 1990s show "Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman" and Glenn Ford, who played the character in the 1978 movie "Superman," which starred Christopher Reeve.
The first Superman on television was George Reeves, who portrayed the hero on "Adventures of Superman" from 1952 to 1958. Dean Cain donned the cape for four seasons on "Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman," while Tom Welling has been portraying Clark Kent on "Smallville" for ten seasons.
Costner last starred alongside Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones in "Company Men." The actor also has three projects in development. Costner won two Oscars in 1991 for his work on "Dances with Wolves," as Best Director and Best Picture, he was also nominated for a Best Actor award for the role.
