Kevin Bacon confirmed for 'X-Men: First Class'; Mystique character has been cast

Kevin Bacon has joined X-Men First Class Variety reports. Entertainment Weekly says his character will be a villain that butts heads with a younger Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

Meanwhile, Winters Bone star Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to play Mystique according to The Hollywood Reporter. The role originated by Rebecca Romijn in the original X-Men trilogy. The movie is set to start filming in August.

X-Men: First Class is directed by Michael Vaughn of Kick Ass fame and James McAvoy has been confirmed to play a young Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic head mutant also known as Professor X. Sir Patrick Stewart played the adult character in three previous X-Men movies.

The film tells of the friendship between the mutant leader and Magneto. Sir Ian McKellen originally played the character, who can create and control magnetism, in the previous films.

Others set to star in X-Men: First Class are Alice Eve, who plays Emma Frost and Nicholas Hoult, who plays Beast.

Bacon shot to fame playing rebellious high school student Ren in the 1984 musical film Footloose, which is currently being remade with Center Stage 2 actor Kenny Wormald in Bacon's old role.

Bacon also starred in the 2008 film Frost/Nixon and the 2000 sci-fi film Hollow Man. He can be seen next in the comedy film Crazy, Stupid, Love, which is set for release on April 22, 2011 and stars Steve Carell. Bacon also stars in the 2011 thriller Elephant White.
