Kelsey Grammer talks to Oprah about cross-dressing rumors, ex Camille (Video)
Kelsey Grammer says he has been "very sexually adventurous" during his life but has never been a cross-dresser, following rumors about his personal life that surfaced after a radio interview with his ex-wife, Camille.
The 57-year-old actor, who played Dr. Frasier Crane on the sitcoms "Frasier" and "Cheers" and now stars in the Starz cable series "Boss," made his comments to Oprah Winfrey during a recent interview taped for her OWN show ""Oprah's Next Chapter," which airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
In February 2011, he married his fourth wife, Kayte, who is 25 years younger than him and also appeared with Kelsey during the program. The two began dating while he was still married to Camille, an ex-Playboy model and former cast member of the Bravo reality show "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." She filed for divorce in July 2010 and it was finalized about two weeks before his and Kayte's wedding.
Camille had said Kelsey broke up with her over the phone a month before she filed for divorce. She spoke about their split on Howard Stern's X-rated Sirius XM radio show in January 2011. Stern, who is notorious for asking personal questions, asked her if Kelsey ever dressed up like a woman when they were married. She laughed and did not confirm or deny it, adding: "He has a little waist. I don't know what to say." The interview spurred several reports that speculated he was a cross-dresser
When asked about it, Kelsey told Winfrey: "Well, she said a lot of bad things about me, didn't she? And I'm a very entertaining, complex guy. No, never been a cross-dresser. But I mean, I don't live as a cross-dresser. But I have been very sexually adventurous."
"Can you tell me what that means?" Winfrey asked.
"No of course not! That's for the bedroom," the actor answered, laughing.
Grammer and Walsh married at the Longacre Theatre in New York, where the actor had starred in a revival of the musical "La Cage aux Folles." He played a homosexual man who runs a drag nightclub with his partner and was nominated for a Tony in 2010 for her performance.
Camille, 43, and Kelsey married in 1997 and have two children, Mason, 10, and Jude, who turned 8 on Tuesday.Winfrey asked the actor about his current relationship with their mother.
"It's not good," Kelsey said. "But we have an arrangement with the children at this point, that I'm fairly happy with. I don't want to say a lot of bad things but some very bad things were said. Some threats were made and some extremely unacceptable behavior took place in front of the children, which makes it impossible for us to pretend that we can be civil. It needs to be handled by other people."
"My only sadness is actually about the kids," he added. "They've heard a lot of things and they've been dealing with a lot of things and they're still told a lot of things on a daily basis that aren't true. I devoted myself to the last marriage I had because it was ... I had just said to myself, 'Okay, I'm not doing this again.'"
Kelsey was previous married to Doreen Alderman from 1982 to 1990. Their daughter is "Greek" actress Spencer Grammer. The actor was also married to former stripper Leigh-Anne Csuhany between 1992 and 1993. During this time, he had a daughter, Greer, out of wedlock.
Kelsey told Winfrey he was not happy in his 13-year marriage to Camille for a long, long time, adding that was like a "sentence" he had imposed on himself and that: "It pretty much was over as soon as it began."
Camille's spokesperson told OTRC.com that the reality star has "lots of thoughts" about the remarks Kelsey made about her to Oprah but does not plan on commenting publicly.
Camille did, however, reTweet a message from a fan that read: "I'm upset that O is giving him attn. It's rewarding bad behavior. He's not America's darlin.U sho class&he's jealous of you! (sic)"
She was also asked by another person if she was OK, with regard to Kelsey's interview. She Tweeted: "Yes. Thanks for asking."
Kayte, while sitting beside her husband, told Winfrey that she felt guilty about beginning a relationship with Grammer while he was married.
"I'm sorry that ... I'm not proud of the way we started out because you were, he was in a marriage and I'm sorry as well," she said. "There's so many emotions but you know I fell in love. I don't have to put it into words. I'd do things differently but then you don't know ... you don't know what the future holds. I fell in love with a guy and I felt guilty for falling in love with him."
Kelsey and Kayte welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Faith, on July 13. They told Winfrey they were currently happy in their relationship.
"We have a love that I think can survive just about anything," Kelsey said.
Kelsey also opened up to Oprah about his sister's death. She was kidnapped, raped and murdered in 1975 at age 18. The actor said he turned to cocaine and alcohol after her death, adding: "I did lose my faith in God for a time. That's the first two years, that's what happened."
